WOW - that's a lot of blood !!
This week we have been trying to calculate how much blood is inside each and every one of us. We were able to do this by using our maths.
Firstly, we weighed ourselves. Mr Day brought his Wii game station in and we weighed ourselves on the Wii Board.
Next we used the well known fact that 7% of our body weight is blood and so divided our weight by 100 and multiplied by 7. Simple really.
Emily Murray was the first to try and recreate the quantity of blood in her body by making red dye to represent the exact quantity she calculated. All 2.8 litres of it looked impressive when in containers. It's not everyday you get to see all the blood inside you at once - hopefully not anyway !!

Who Said Maths is Difficult ?
One student in particular has been making fantastic progress in their maths this term. Now, Emily would be the first to admit that she hasn't always found maths easy. However, she has worked incredibly hard this term and made fantastic progress. This positive attitude towards maths has meant she has learnt heaps and walked away with a large block of chocolate in recognition of her efforts.
It goes to prove that you only get out of life what you put in! Well done Emily - I am delighted for you and feel free to share your chocolate with your maths teacher whenever you wish !!

Netball Fever
We all felt very proud on Saturday when the St Pat's netball teams took on the best netballers in the Primary Finals Day.
The St Pat's Diamonds caused the audience to chew their finger nails beyond the point of comfort as they produced a mighty effort to narrowly beat Solway 21-20 in the dying seconds of the game.
A fantastic effort from the whole team and well done to Taylor, Sian, Aisha, Samantha and Gemma from Room 1. They were the overall winners of grade 5 for the whole of the Wairarapa. Congratulations to the players and to the coaches !! Mr Day, Mr Murray and Mr Wheeler really enjoyed seeing you do so well and so did all the parents and whanau. You rock !!!!!
The St Pat's Hearts played the Lakeview Flames and lost 7-9 in their final. A huge well done to the girls for making it to the last game of the season and well done to the Room 1 girls - Emily and Hope. Congratulations also to the St Pat's Spades who lost to Carterton Kowhai 16-6 in their final.

The ALL team
Meet the 'ALL Team'. They are a group boys who are diving into writing and producing a variety of different writing styles.
Come to Room 7 and check out their stories.
Mr McCann was our hero this week when he came and spoke to the 'ALL Team' about firearm safety and of course some good hunting stories.

A Fish's Tale
In keeping with the Book of the Week theme, Mr Day told us a fishy tale all about the 2 metre long trout he caught at the weekend - unfortunately it got away. Anyway he brought in another, somewhat smaller, brown trout and showed us how to fillet it ready for the smoker.
We also got to talk about how it feeds and even stick our fingers in it's mouth to feel its sharp teeth.
In term 4, we aim to try smoking trout ourselves at school and eat it perhaps for the first time. Possibly a Fish Festival with Mr Murray supplying the fresh kahawai and Mr Day the trout. Yum !!

Book Week
Students were encouraged to come to school today dressed as a character from a book as a way of celebrating National Book Week. Students and staff made a great effort to recreate some of their favourite characters.
See if you can recognise who came to school as who.
Also keep your eye out in the Times Age tomorrow as you may recognise a face or two.
Well done St Patrick's School and well done Room 1. A great day of celebrating books !!

Room 1 are getting into the ancient game of chess which apparently originated in India 1500 years ago !!
Mr Day is starting a chess club every lunchtime in Room 7 and thought Room 1 students would like the chance to get to know how to play.
While the choir were away in Wellington for Art Splash, we had a chess day and learn some pretty snazzy moves. Bad luck to all those students who tried to beat Mr Day - and lost miserably !!

Happy Birthday Ladies
We were all lucky enough to have a special lunch to celebrate Samantha and Mikaela's birthday.
We all had pizza followed by an ice block and cookies. A brilliant way to end a week. Thank you and happy birthday from all of us.

Maths in Action
At the moment we are learning a lot in maths - fractions, ratios and capacity (the measurement of liquids). As always the key is to be able to see how to use this learning in everyday life.
Today Mr Day set us two challenges. Firstly, could we estimate the quantity of water in a range of different bottles using our knowledge of fractions and capacity ? Could we then accurately measure the quantity using a measuring jug. How close were we ?
Secondly, we were given a series of different coloured objects and had to work out the ratios of each colour. For example - how many yellow counters are there to red counters (yellow:red)
